DrayTek Vigor 2860Ln 4G SIM Integrated Router/Firewall

The Vigor 2860Ln is essentially a Vigor2860n except with provision for 4G (Cellular/LTE) connectivity in the shape of an internal 4G modem. The inbuilt 4G modem is compatible with all UK/Ireland cellular networks except for the 'Relish' network.

The embedded 4G/LTE modem is inbuilt as opposed to having to add a fragile and cumbersome external/USB modem whish will protrude from the front of your router. You insert a standard-sized SIM into the slot on the rear panel of the router which is then secured with a sealable cover to prevent accidental or unauthorised removal, or you can leave the cover off if you need easy access.

The Vigor 2860L modem provides backward compatibility to 3G networks just as any 4G smartphone and so will connect where newer services are not yet available. You can also use the inbuilt modem for full function SMS messaging functionality and control.

The 3G/4G modem service can either be the primary Internet connection, with an optional redundant fallback to another WAN connection using the DSL or Ethernet ports or alternatively 3G/4G can can act as the redundancy for the DSL/Ethernet connection.

Just as with any other 2860, the possibility exists to add extra connctivity with a USB 4G dongle and so you can use 4G as a backup for 4G.

As usual, the 2860 has onboard VDSL/ADSL as well as Ethernet WAN connectivity for cable or leased-line solutions. Built-in Wi-Fi is also supported in the shape of 802.11n wireless networking.

The Vigor 2860Ln provides the following features on 3G/4G (in additional to all usual Vigor2860 features):

  • Standard-Size SIM Slot
  • Sending/Receiving of SMS (Text) messages to Web Interface

The specification and compatibility listed here applies only to the UK model for use in the UK & Ireland - product code  V2860LN-K. For use in other regions,  you should ensure that you are buying the model intended for that country and its cellular networks. When purchasing your unit, ensure it matches your region (the outer box is clearly labelled) in order that it has the correct regional network support and compatibility.

Text Message (SMS) Control & Reporting

As a cellular network device, the Vigor 2860Ln takes full advantage of text-messaging (SMS) allowing remote interrogation and administration.   Sending a simple text message (content: 'router status') to the router SIM mobile number from any regular cellphone will get an instant reply explaining the current status, firmware version, each WAN port's IP address, status and data volumes.

('router reboot') allows a reboot of the router remotely. For obvious security reasons, this command requires a password. A whitelist setting will only allow messages from a specified numbe,r preventing unauthorised rogue commands.

The Vigor 2860Ln also allows you to send and receive text messages from the admin web console. Checking incoming messages allows you to read service provider messages notifiying you that you are low on credit and is also a quick way to send a message from your web browser.  This facility can also be very useful to confirm your credit balance for PAYG SIMs.  You can also send text messages from the command line via a telnet connection allowing simpler integration for automating tasks from the command line or other code.
